Badal seeks Modi's intervention for constituting SIT to probe 1984 Sikh Genocide

Badal ModiChandigarh, February 1, 2015 (Yes Punjab News)

Seeking direct and personal intervention of Prime Minister Mr. Narendra Modi for constituting Special Investigation Team (SIT) to probe in all the cases related to pre-planned 1984 Sikh genocide, the Punjab Chief Minister Mr. Parkash Singh Badal today urged the Government of India (GoI) to take an immediate call on the recommendations of Justice (Retd.) GP Mathur Panel constituted by the Centre to reinvestigate several important cases related to anti-Sikh violence that broke out after the assassination of then Prime Minister Mrs. Indira Gandhi.

In a letter to Mr. Modi, the Chief Minister apprised him that the Shiromani Akali Dal (SAD) has been struggling at constant to get justice for the victims of 1984 genocide in Delhi and other parts of the country. He said that on the demand of SAD, the Justice (Retd) GP Mathur panel had been constituted in December, 2014 by the NDA Government to examine the possibility of constitution of a SIT for reinvestigating of the1984 genocide.

The Chief Minister said that now the former SC Judge in his 45-page report, has suggested setting up of a Special Investigation Team (SIT) for the purpose and also has favoured reinvestigation of many vital cases where crucial evidence was overlooked adding that there were several such cases that were closed by the Delhi police and never sent to the court for trial. Even two high profile cases involving Congress leaders Sajjan Kumar and Jagdish Tytler too needed to be reinvestigated, added Mr. Badal.

The Chief Minister further said that this sensitive issue had so far been under wraps by the previous successive Congress governments at the Centre but now the recommendations of Justice (Retd.) Mathur panel were being viewed as a ray of hope for the hapless victims of 1984 genocide who had been eluded justice till date in their long ordeal for seeking justice spanning little over three decades.

The chief minister urged the Prime Minister to give appropriate instructions to the Ministry of Home Affairs for initiating immediate action to set up SIT without any further delay for probing the entire cases thoroughly related to well organized carnage against Sikhs in the national capital and other parts of the country. “By doing so, the Government of India (GoI) will not merely assuage the bruised psyche of Sikh community but it will also be largely seen as a light at the end of the tunnel for the victims” added Mr. Badal.
