Chandigarh to host Sunrise All-India Junior Badminton Ranking Tournament

The Chandigarh Badminton Association (CBA) will host the Yonex Sunrise All-India Junior Badminton Ranking Tournament, under the aegis of Badminton Association of India (BAI), for the first time, in Chandigarh.

 

The championship will be conducted  from September 18 to 23 and will be played at the nine Hova-layer courts of the Sector 43 Sports Complex and three badminton courts of the Sector 42 Sports Complex.

 

The championship is being sponsored by Yonex Sunrise, Toyota Kirloskar, Somany Tiles Nirman Ghar, Indian Oil, Harton, HAFED and JCB.

 

The qualifying matches will be played from September 18 to 19 at both the venues, while the main draw matches, starting from September 20, will be played only at Sector 43 Sports Complex.

 

Former international player and current chief national coach of the Indian Badminton team Pullela Gopichand will inaugurate the main draw matches on September 20. His daughter Gayatri Gopichand, will be also playing in this championship.

 

According to CBA secretary  and organising secretary Surinder Mahajan over 1040 players have signed in for the qualifying event and the championship will be played under the supervision of BAI grade-I/II referees.

 

“This will be for the first time that Chandigarh will host such big national event. We are expecting over 1040 players for the qualifying rounds. To make this championship a huge success, both CBA and the BAI is making best of their effort. The qualifying matches will start at 8 am and will be played till late evening, while the main draw matches will be played as per schedule,” said Surinder Mahajan.

 

The CBA also extend a warm thanks to Dr. Hemanta Biswa Sarma President BAI, for giving an opportunity to host such a huge championship here. While informing the media, TPS Puri said that a total cash prize of Rs 4 lakhs will be distributed among the winners. “A total cash prize of Rs 4 lakh will be awarded to the winners. Based on their rankings two local players Garima and Ishita will feature in the main draw, while other will be given a wild card entry as per the rules. There will be more that 120 players, who will be given a direct wild card entry to the main draw,” informed TPS Puri.

 

While giving information about the participants Omar Rashid, Secretary BAI events, said that all top seed players will vie for the top honour. “Top seed players of the nation will play in this championship. While looking at a huge response for in the qualifying events, we are expecting a tough competition in the main draw stage. The matches will be played under BAI rules, and there are possibilities that the national selectors may come to watch the matches to scout the future talent,” said Omar Rashid.

 

Col Raj Parmar, joint organising secretary of the tournament, informed that the BAI will also select players for the World Championships. “The BAI scouts will also scrutinise players for the World Championships. The players will have an excellent opportunity to showcase their talent, here,” said Col Raj Parmar.

 

Meanwhile, Priyank Bharti (IAS), President of CBA, informed that top seed players, including, Akarshi Kashyap will be also featuring in the championship. “The CBA has prepared all the venues, as top seeds players of different categories will come here to make their future. We are leaving no stone unturned to make this championship a success,” said Priyank Bharti.
