Punjab to equip pre-labour and post-natal rooms with required infrastructure and equipment

Labour room compounds in all the health institutions must be fully equipped and functional toilets should be available in all the pre-labour, labour and post-natal rooms in the hospitals. These directions were given by Ms. Vini Mahajan, Principal Secretary (Health & Finance), Punjab during the meeting of the State Executive Committee of State Health Mission held under her chairpersonship. Sh Hussan Lal, Secretary Medical Education & Mission Director, National Health Mission, Punjab were also present.

 

Ms. Vini Mahajan directed that a gap-analysis of all the 100 strengthened institutions must be conducted on priority and a proposal to strengthen the labour rooms be prepared on its basis. She further directed to strengthen the linkage between sub-centre and higher health institutions i.e. Community Health Centers, Sub-Divisional Hospitals, District Hospitals and Tertiary Health Institutions, while adding that the patients diagnosed at higher facilities should be able get medicines and drugs from the nearby Primary Health Centres. Medical Officers of the PHC’s should ensure the regular supplies of medicines and themselves monitor the health concerns of the patients in their areas.

 

Ms. Vini Mahajan also asked to display adequate health awareness material regarding benefits under Janani Shishu Suraksha Karyakram (JSSK) and free treatment of girl-child in all the Anganwadi Centres. She asked the officers from Department of Social Security Women & Child Development to ensure that posters etc are appropriately displayed at all Anganwadi Centres. She also asked the Director General of School Education to devise a strategy with the objective to strengthen the Immunization programme in private schools. She said that Directorate of Health & Family Welfare will supply the protocols of immunization and Education Department shall issue the instruction for the immunization in private schools. In case of logistic service requirements schools can contact the concerned Block SMO of Civil Surgeon.

 

While discussing the progress under the Universal Health Coverage (UHC) Pilot project in Shahid Bhagat Singh Nagar (Nawanshahr), Sh Hussan Lal informed that Household screening of 5 diseases (Hypertension, Diabetes, Asthma, Epilepsy and COPD) in the 5 villages has already been done and patients are getting medicines at nearby PHCs. For the other villages screening will begin this week. The drugs available in the Essential Drugs List (EDL) are being provided to the patients and EDL is being revised on the basis of fresh requirements under UHC. Ms Vini Mahajan asked the officers to further speed up the pace of implementation of UHC project and put in-place the requisite infrastructure and equipment and make sure that it is properly utilized.

 

Among others the meeting was attended by Dr Karanjit Singh, Director Health Services; Dr Jatinder Kaur, Director Family Welfare and representatives from the departments of Social Security & WCD, Education, Local Government, Water Supply & Sanitation.
