Transfer of ED official has vindicated Capt Amarinder's stand on drugs probe: Congress MLAs

Amarinder-ShadowPatiala, January 22, 2015 (Yes Punjab News)

Several Congress legislators today said that the developments related to the transfer of senior ED official probing the drug smuggling case has vindicated the stand of Capt Amarinder Singh, who had opposed the transfer of investigations to CBI, as it would have delayed it indefinitely.

In a joint statement the party legislators including Sukhjinder Singh Randhawa, Tripat Rajinder Singh Bajwa, Rana Gurjeet Singh, Rana Sodhi, and Balbir Sidhu observed that had the ED official not been transferred, which though has now been stayed by the Honourable Punjab and Haryana High Court, challan would have been filed on time.

They said, had the case been transferred to the CBI it would have been delayed indefinitely as it might have taken years. They said, while CBI was no doubt a very competent investigating agency, but given the volume of work it was already preoccupied with, it would not have been possible for the agency to complete the investigations as fast as done by the ED.

“The very fact that the ED investigation official was transferred at a crucial juncture vindicates Capt Amarinder’s stand that it (the investigation) should not be transferred to any other agency”, they said, while pointing out, “if the mere transfer of an official would delay the filing of challan indefinitely one can imagine how much delay would have been there had the entire case been transferred to another agency”.

They said, it was unfortunate that both the officials, Hardayal Mann, previous SSP Patiala and Niranjan Singh Assistant Director ED, who were doing their job meritoriously were transferred out at a crucial stage thus delaying the filing of the challan which would have embarrassed the Akali-BJP government and many of their leaders.
