Amritsar police brutally cane-charged protesting ETT teachers from as many as half a dozen districts of the state on sunday when they tried to move towards the residence of Punjab cabinet minister Bikram Singh Majithia.

About a dozen teachers including some women protesters were hurt in the lathi-charge. some policemen have also been injured, it has been claimed. The police have arrested over a dozen teachers, a police official said on the condition of anonymity.

Turbans of at least two Sikh teachers fell during the lathicharge and women protesters also had to bear the brunt of the police. One of the teachers was seen with a serious injury near her eye.

It is pertinent to mention here that the ETT teachers, employed with Zila Parishad are on the warpath with the government demanding that they be absorbed in the department of Education to which they rightfully belong.

ETT techers from Amritsar, Gurdaspur, Pathankot, Tarn Taran and Kapurthala districts today gathered in Company Bagh where ETT Teachers Union district president Sudhir Dhand and others addressed the protesting teachers.

Thereafter the teachers, said to be around 700, marched towards the Green Avenue residence of Bikram Singh Majithia but were stopped near the residence of Deputy Commissioner.

The protesters then staged a peaceful dharna then and there outside the residence of the Deputy Commissioner.  Sources said that SAD district president Upkar Singh Sandhu and Deputy Mayor Avtar Singh Truckanwala also came on the scene but allegedly offered no 'solution' to the protesting teachers who then tried to march towards the residence of the minister.

A source told YesPunjab.com that an officer of the rank of the ADCP provoked the leaders of the teachers by daring them to cross the barricades put by the police which resulted into heated arguements and the teachers tried to push their way towards their 'destination'.

The ADCP then, without exercising the option of using water cannons straightaway ordered lathi charge on the protesters.
