Rana Sodhi launches ‘Buddy’ drug eradication campaign in Jalandhar

Giving a clarion call to the youth to act as a catalyst for wiping out curse of drugs from the state, the Sports and Youth Affairs Minister Punjab Rana Gurmit Singh Sodhi today launched the ‘Buddy’ drug eradication program in the district in a big way.

 

The Minister, accompanied by Deputy Commissioner Jalandhar Mr. Varinder Kumar Sharma and Commissioner of Police Mr. Praveen Kumar Sinha, pinned the badge on the leaders of ‘Buddy’ group and handed over the flag of the scheme to them. He exhorted them to come forward for wiping out this curse from the state in general and district in particular. The Minister said that the program was aimed at giving final push to make the state free of the drug abuse by making the vulnerable group of youngsters aware about it.

 

The Minister said that ‘Buddy’ was a flagship scheme of the state government in which every educational institute would form a buddy group from the sixth standard onwards. He said that the group would comprise three to five students and the class teachers would be senior buddy whereas the Principals of institute would be the Super buddy, who would oversee all the activities in their institute. Rana Gurmit Singh Sodhi said that buddy group would devote 30-40 minutes every week as a crusade against drugs.

 

The Minister said that as per studies children in adolescent age group as well as in the age group of 18-25 years reel under great peer pressure due to which this age group was a vulnerable groups. He emphasized that the Buddy program would lay thrust on students, as part of which a group of three to five students of same section/batch was formed, who monitor, motivate and hold moral responsibility for each other and encourage mutual safety and empowerment.

 

Rana Gurmit Singh Sodhi said that Buddy group should discuss harmful effects of drugs from time to time and also identifies signs of drug use among peer group and encourages them not to indulge in drug abuse. “The ‘Buddy’ group is flag holder of state government’s campaign to make Punjab drug free and you all must contribute generously towards this noble cause” he asked the youth.
