Jalandhar Civil Hospital to have ultra-modern burn unit worth Rs 150 crore

In a bid to impart quality treatment to burn patients in the district, the Punjab government has decided to set up a full-fledged burn unit at Shaheed Babu Labh Singh Civil Hospital to facilitate the people.

 

Both the state and Central Government have approved the proposal with the fund contribution in the ratio of 40:60.  The total cost of project is Rs 150 crore and it will be constructed on the building of trauma centre in the hospital. 

 

Till the time work of burn unit starts, an intensive care unit and exclusive operation theatre (OT) for treatment of burn patients will come up in the next two months. The ICU and OT will be built on the third floor of the civil hospital's main building.  

 

Deputy Commissioner (DC) Mr Varinder Kumar Sharma said that with a grant of Rs 58 lakh issued by Rajya Sabha MP Naresh Gujral under MPLAD scheme, the proposal for the acute burn ICU and OT has been cleared and is going to be taken up soon. Further, existing two chronic burn wards (separately for male and female) would also be upgraded.

 

He said that funds for the purchase of the equipment have also been received and the purchase committee is in the process of tendering under the Civil Surgeon as Chairperson.

 

Mr Sharma said that once work of burn unit completes, it will act as a referral centre in the state.

 

Senior plastic surgeon Dr Chanjiv Singh, who is also SMO in the civil hospital and has wide experience in the country and abroad, is a key person behind the project. 

 

He said that the first phase of the burn unit will be completed in the next two months.

 

He revealed that a proposal to train General surgeons serving with the Punjab Government in Burn care was submitted by him and the state government has given in-principle approval to his proposal.

 

He informed that as soon as the financial aspects are finalized, all the surgeons will be trained in burns. 

 

Moreover, he said that Dr Surajit Bhattacharya President of Association of Plastic Surgeons of India has offered his advice in planning and running the unit in the civil hospital.
