More than six people shot from close range at a group of three at Khosa Dal Singh village on the Ferozepur-Zira road under Mallanwala police station in Ferozepur on Friday afternoon, killing two and injuring the third.
The injured has been admitted to the Ferozepur civil hospital.
The armed attack took place at a dog-show organised in the village and there is no clarity on the sequence of events that led to the ghastly murder of two and the attackers reportedly used the noise and the chaos created by the event to make good their escape.
Sukhdeep Singh Sekhon Karmiti, 37, of Karmiti village, Manpreet Singh alias Vicky of Klassa village were killed, while Kewal Singh alias Kali of Naruang village was injured.
The assailants were seen escaping while firing shots in the air and in their two vehicles (a Black Jeep and another Bolero).
One of the victims, Karmiti, had been booked for attempt to murder and land grabbing and was out on bail from Faridkot jail.
He was also a close aide of notorious gangster Happy Deora of Ferozepur, who was allegedly shot dead by Shera, another gangster and his aides in Ferozepur on July 1, 2012, following which Shera and Karmiti Sekhon factions had become sworn enemies.
Ferozepur SSP Manminder Singh, SP(D) Raghbir Singh Sandhu and SP(H) Lakhbir Singh visited the spot.
When contacted, Manminder said that an injured Kali had identified ones Chandu and Jaipal of Ferozepur as main assaulters and around six attackers were involved.
"No motive for the attack has yet been established. However, we are close to nabbing the accused," claimed the senior superintendent of police.
