Patiala, Aug. 18, 2013 –
Hundreds of ASHA workers protested outside the residence of minister of state for external affairs Preneet Kaur on Saturday, demanding a monthly salary of Rs 2,500, health insurance cover and free bus travel passes during working hours.
The Accredited Social Health Activist (ASHA) clashed with the police, after they were not allowed to move further towards the MP's residence.
State president of ASHA Workers' Union, Kirandeep Kaur, alleged that the Central government had failed to meet their demands, in spite of several representations.
"We work hard and for long hours in villages, yet we get a meagre Rs 10 for registration of a pregnant woman and a very small amount for vaccination," she said. DSP Kesar Singh rushed to the spot to pacify the protesters.
