'Married daughter to death' - Ravinder Kaur Bhangu's family in Patiala now regrets

Ravinder Kaur Bhangu Canada NRIRajpura (Patiala), June 23, 2013 –

A family feels guilty that it married its daughter to death in Canada. Sub editor Ravinder Kaur Bhangu was murdered by her husband, Manmeet Singh, in her office in Surrey, Canada, and though a Canadian court awarded him life sentence, the victim's parents cannot now forgive themselves.

"Life sentence is okay but there should be death penalty. We still regret that marriage, as there were several well-to-do families approaching us for our daughter. We married her to death in Canada. The murder still hounds us, makes us sleepless," said Balbir Singh Bhangu, father of Ravinder Kaur.

Balbir Singh Bhangu of Dalima Vihar, Rajpura, deputy manager in Indian Farmers Fertiliser Co-operative Limited (IFFCO) at Fatehgarh Sahib, also has a son, Vikramjit Singh, quality manger in the Food Corporation of India (FCI) in Patiala. Bhangu regrets never verifying about Manmeet before fixing the match. "As of now, I can only wish that the Canada government files application for enhancing his sentence or even giving him death penalty, if the rules provide" he said.

He gets updates on the verdict of the Supreme Court of British Columbia, Canada, from Ravinder's friends. "A lot of witnesses deposed in court for her, which shows how popular she was. She helped new immigrants settle in Canada and taught gidda and other folk dances to people," said Bhangu. Her popularity got her into trouble, as Manmeet started harassing her over this and both parted ways.

"As my daughter decided to move from Surrey, Manmeet murdered her," said the guilt-ridden father. "She had booked air tickets to visit Rajpura and meet us but the tragedy occurred," said Sarabjit Kaur, Ravinder's mother.

In December 2008, Ravinder married her classmate, Manmeet of Mirch Mandi area. Both had studied at Patel College before Manmeet moved to Canada with parents. From there, he made a marriage proposal to Ravinder. Irritated over separation, the same Manmeet murdered Ravinder in her office on July 28, 2011, with a sharp-edged weapon. Ravinder died on the spot and a colleague got injured trying to save her.

A Canadian court on Saturday awarded life sentence to Manmeet for murder, for which he himself pleaded guilty.
