Punjab Technical University (PTU) leveraging on the latest in information technology (IT) and its application in education has announced the digitization initiative. Under this initiative more than 600 books of different subjects and courses have been digitized and uploaded on its server so far. This is aimed at benefitting more than 1,00,000 students of the University who are enrolled in Distance Education courses across more than 2000 learning centers pan-India.

Learning centers have been given username and passwords for Self Instruction Material (SIM) or books and they in turn are in the process of disseminating the same to students. Students can visit the PTU website and key in the username and password assigned to them for accessing and downloading the e-books. Advanced digital rights management techniques have been used whereby students shall be able to access and download e-books only pertaining to the course they are registered for, and not of any other course.

According to Dr. Rajneesh Arora, Vice Chancellor, Punjab Technical University (PTU), “After streamlining the examination system successfully, we are pleased to announce the e-book initiative. In less than 3 months we have been able to digitize and upload more than 600 books. Our endeavor is to make all books for every subject and course available online eventually.”

“We are a Technical University and therefore use of technology is only logical. Besides the convenience of accessing and downloading study material anytime and from anywhere, students will also stand to gain from reduction and refund of the study material component which is 4% of their fee. The cumulative value of the refund to the students is over Rs 10 crore. This initiative cuts down the logistical delays and intermediary costs which were a problem area earlier,” informed Dr. Arora.

Some of the major courses for which e-books have been made available online include B.Sc. (Fashion Technology), M.Sc. (Fashion Technology), B.Sc. (Medical Lab Technology), BBA, MBA, MBA – HMGT (Hospital Management), B.Sc. (Information Technology), M.Sc. (Information Technology), DCA (Diploma in Computer Applications), BCA, MCA, PGDCA, B.Sc. – HMCTT (Hotel Management, Catering Technology & Tourism), MBA (Hotel Management), DoTT (Diploma in Operation Theatre Technology) etc.

Punjab Technical University (PTU) was established in 1997 under the Punjab Technical University Act, 1996 (Punjab Act No. 1 of 1997) to provide for the establishment and incorporation of a University for the advancement of technical education and development thereof in the State of Punjab and for matters connected therewith.
